Marching Band? Sure why not… oops did I just say that?

I am all about trying new things and all but how you marching band directors do it I will never know. I have stated many times that I am a choir director that has to teach band as well. But since I do teach band as well I have decided recently to go ahead and try to do a Marching band with show and all. Wow I have a new respect for anyone who has ever pulled it off and I feel bad for all the crap I gave to myMarching Band teacher in High School. Sorry Mr. Hill :)
So it didn’t start out to bad. We got 2 songs to start with that I thought would be easy and yet still fun to start with. Low Rider and Viva la Vida were my choices. We got them out the first day of school and we did a good job of reading through them. That was the easy part.
Then we took to the field. We have a small band about 30 people which I guess can be good and bad. Well out of these 30 kids 2 have marching experience on from and excellent program and one that sounds about like ours. Well lets just say we had an “interesting” day that day.
To skip over the painful details we have decided for now to skip the technical aspect of marching and for now we are focusing on walking from one point to another while doing a little thing called playing. Well we are getting there… slowly… very slowly. But we bumped our concert back 3 weeks and that should give us the time we need to be, OK.
But for the marching competition – NEXT WEEK – I am debating two different scenarios.

1. Go watch, take notes and let the kids see what marching is really supposed to look like.
or
2. Go all the way with the cheesy and do a marching show that is simple as all get out with a lot of humor.
Check back and well see what happens :)
